Consequences of Not Acting

The latest debacle out of Parliament House relating to allegations of sexual assault and inappropriate touching is a debacle yes, and a real mess.

There are so many elements to this issue and some of those elements to be considered may offend but there are a lot of players who have allowed this situation to get to where it is.

If Senator Van is guilty of what he has been accused of, and those above him knew about it, why did they not act?  Apparently they did but it was a pretty lame act.

This is an issue on the national stage.  Yet there are unacceptable behaviours being ‘accepted’ in businesses everywhere.  Bullying, harassment, abuse, downright nastiness just because, and even incompetence.  In some businesses, everyone will know it is happening.  In others, maybe only a few.  When these unacceptable behaviours are allowed to continue they become beacons of examples for everyone else that it is okay to behave in the same manner.

When there is no consequence, people will continue to behave the same way.  Others see there is no consequence and believe they can get away with it too.

And the cycle continues…

Yet whether we are the one delivering the unacceptable behaviour, the one receiving it, or bystanders, we are all allowing the behaviour to continue.  I’m not saying I’m innocent because there is definitely one incident which sits in my mind when I was an employee which I should have acted on and didn’t.  It wasn’t on the same scale as some but something should have been done.

We all have choices in life.  The choice here is whether we stay quiet and let unacceptable behaviour continue or do we choose to speak up.

‘In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.’

Martin Luther King Jr.
