Leadership Pipeline

Twists and Turns

There may be many reasons why a Manager’s leadership style is not effective.  We’re going to delve into one of those reasons now.

How many times have you looked at a Manager and thought ‘how did they get there’?  They are missing so many attributes of what it takes to be a good leader and manager.

It is common for people to be promoted because they are technically good and they may have been very successful in their previous roles.  Yet put them in a role where they have to lead people and everything seems to crumble.

This affliction is best described in The Leadership Pipeline by Charan, Drotter and Noel.  The Leadership Pipeline describes the turns we each must take as we make our way through the Pipeline.  The term ‘turn’ refers to the changes required to step up to each new leadership role.  These include the skill requirements, where you should be focusing your time and the level of work required.

If the Manager isn’t assisted in preparing for the next level of leadership, or they won’t make the required changes, the Manager will be working at the wrong level for their role which, in turn, ripples through the business so no-one is working at the right level.  Imagine how this impacts the performance of a business.  Not to mention how it also impacts the rest of the Team who aren’t working at the right level – not succeeding and achieving, feeling stifled and frustrated.

Are you working at the right level for your leadership role?  What is the impact for your business and your Team?
