Tenacity

The Australian Summer of Tennis is over for another year.  And what a Summer of Tennis it was!

The Finals got me thinking about the character of those who were the eventual victors.

Special K.  Kokkinakis and Kyrgios.  What a Team!  It was brilliant to see Kyrgios enjoying his tennis and playing so well.  However, for me, Kokkinakis is the real story here.  Two weeks prior to winning the Men’s Doubles at the Australian Open he won the Men’s Singles at the Adelaide International in front of his home crowd.  Kokkinakis has been plagued by injury during his career which obviously impacted his performance yet he appears to have turned a significant corner.

Ash Barty.  We all know Barty’s story.  Played tennis, left tennis to play cricket, and then returned to be the successful player she is today.  Won Wimbledon last year, now the Australian Open and she is number one in the world.  A role model for so many.  There is more for Barty to achieve, and it was not an easy road to get to where she is today.

Last, but definitely not least, Rafael Nadal.  Now acknowledged as the greatest of all time, Nadal did not know if he would play tennis again due to a foot injury and consequent surgery.  It was not an easy win for him and it came 13 years after his first Australian Open title.  But he did it!

One thing all three champions have in common, is tenacity.  No matter the adversity thrown at them, mentally and physically, they kept persevering.  The championships they have won and the achievement to be on the court, is their just reward.

How many of us let adversity throw us off course from what we want to achieve?  As I watched Nadal play the Final, even when he was two sets down, I believed he would win.  He wanted it more.  Maybe he deserved it more.

Achievement requires more than a vision – it takes courage, resolve and tenacity.  All you have got to do is plant that seed in your mind, care for it, work steadily toward your goal, and it will become a reality.’
